I've been to many, many spas, but I have never gotten as much personal attention and felt as well cared for as I did during my week at the original Golden Door Spa in Escondido. Find out what makes it so special, and why a visit can truly be a life-transforming event. It also got me thinking about some of my other favorite spas, and what makes them stand out.

Golden Door: The Best For Pampering

If you're looking for an intimate, customized experience, you can't do any better than the original Golden Door, founded by spa pioneer Deborah Szekely in 1958. It's hard to describe just how magical this place is -- rooted in history yet fresh and in-the-moment -- but I give it my best.

Miraval: The Best For Personal Challenge

Miraval is the only spa with a huge challenge course out back where you can do everything from a thrilling ride on 1,000-foot zipline to balancing 30 feet up in the air (all safely of course). Its Equine Experience has been imitated but never equalled.
