Best of Europe

From James Martin, your Guide to Europe Travel
Ok, today, while Italy and California commence their sweltering and the odds of Greece leaving the euro increase, our journey through the alphabet lands on the odd letter "u" so I'm going to cheat and combine it with the letter "v" so as to increase the likelihood that something I've written will tickle your fancy--or something. Then there's Girona Barcelona, but that's a thing by itself.

Girona Barcelona Map and Guide
It may sound like a Woody Allen movie, but Girona Barcelona is Ryanair's name for an airport once called Aeropuerto di Girona that happens to be quite a distance from Barcelona. See just how far on our map, because if you've found that perfect Ryanair flight to "Barcelona" you're going to land near Girona, a very nice walled city you might want to visit.

Verona, Italy
Opera lovers make the pilgrimage to Verona, of course, to sit in that ancient arena to hear larger-than-life figures bellowing musically; romantics make the pilgrimage to tear up over Juliet's house, I trudge up the Torre dei Lamberti so I can eat more of the Veronese specialty bigoli with duck sauce. To each his own.

Umbria Map and Travel Guide
Yes, Italy has a lot of "U" towns and even a region. Look to Italy's green heart for a sparsely populated but very interesting place, THE place to be in crowded season, especially when the natives head to the beaches.

Viaden Castle
If you like verdant, natural scenery studded with castles, this little corner of the Ardennes might just be what you need to charge those batteries of yours.
