The school year's coming to a close, which means that many of you are looking for the perfect end-of-the year gift for your favorite teacher. When choosing presents, I recommend not regifting weird things you find around the house.
"That's an odd idea," you might say to yourself. "What would ever make you think I'd do a thing like that?" Well, when I was growing up, my best friend's Mom was a teacher. And her students used to give her some very weird things.
Example A: One student gave my friend's Mom an apple ... with a bite out of it. We weren't sure whether or not to take that as a partial tip. Sort of like people who leave ten percent of the check in a restaurant.
Example B: A potholder, made entirely out of cat hair. This gets points for being homemade, but loses points for being sort of grisly in a non-specific way.
Things are definitely looking up, though: a friend of mine who teaches now tells me she gets tons of coffee cards and homemade drawings from her students. I have to think those are tied for best gift ever.
