A mother whale is struck by harpoons. Once inside her, the harpoons explode. Then her calf is hit, beside her. The whales struggle, sometimes for as long as an hour, before they bleed to death or drown, strapped to the side of the boat with their heads held under water.

It's unimaginable. Yet the Japanese government has announced $30 million in new subsidies to support the whaling industry — ensuring that this horrific scene will play out again and again.

But together we can stop this slaughter. Please help us reach our $75,000 goal by December 31 — make your year-end gift right now. Just 8 more donations from your state will get us to our goal.

As you read this, the Japanese whaling fleet is speeding toward the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Whales in these waters are supposed to be protected, but the Japanese government defends its hunt as “scientific exploration.”

Nana, this isn’t science. It's a massacre, pure and simple. Whale meat winds up on the market. And thousands of tons of that meat wind up uneaten, rotting away in warehouses because most Japanese know this is wrong and don't want to eat whale meat.

It's time for the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to crack down. That's why Greenpeace is mobilizing public support, working with the Obama administration, and leading a coalition to save whales and protect our oceans and planet.

Thanks to calls and letters from activists like you, we've already persuaded President Obama to impose diplomatic sanctions on Iceland. It's a step toward saving whales, but the president must go further and end the Japanese whale hunt.

Your immediate support allows us to ramp up the pressure on President Obama and the IWC and save countless whales from brutal deaths.

Don't wait — make your gift before December 31 to save these whales and protect our planet. Together we can reach our $75,000 goal with just 8 more gifts from your state.

Greenpeace fights independently, without financial support from corporations or governments. Your generosity now can be the difference our world needs.

Thank you,

Philip Radford
