Moving 14-Year-Old Son to a New High School in a New Town
A mom seeks advice on our forum: "I have never done anything like this before but I would like others opinions. We are moving about two hours away and my 14 year old son is gonna be going into highschool and he is not excited about it at all. We have lived in the town were in now since he was in the third grade. I am struggling a little with it as well, I feel like I am hurting him or he's gonna rebel and meet the wrong group of friends. He does play football so that will be a plus being that it starts a month before school does. I just feel like it may be wrong to move a child right before they start highschool?? Just looking for a little advice to hopefully make me feel like i'm not making the wrong choice or to tell me that I am :) !"

Denise's thoughts: While a change in location is never easy, I think it is doable right now for your son as he is just getting started in high school this coming year. Talk about what he feels will make the transition easier for him, like ways he can keep in touch with his friends and maybe having a going away party or outing. Then, when you get to your destination, help him to meet people his own age by being there to provide rides, etc. Lastly, I think you should try and not be too guilty. Families sometimes have to move, this type of change is a part of life.

Asking our community of parents of teens: Do you have advice for this mom? Have you moved your child to a different town? Please share your thoughts, advice and experiences in the comments area.
