From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
"Vacation", the dictionary tells us, is a "period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation". But thanks to technology, we can easily bring work and an intense online social life along with us...

Is Your Vacation a Real (Offline) Getaway?
The upshot is that vacationers may have to actively decide to limit connectivity, to truly leave it all behind. The stay-plugged-in/ go-unplugged decision gets especially important for family vacations, where the goal is to spend time together, yet it's all too easy for a family member to be light-years away in cyberspace. Share your opinion with this quick poll: Do You Close the Portals to Cyberspace, on a Family Vacation?

Street View at the Polynesian Cultural Center
And speaking of technology, which of course we do love.... Here's a neat use of Street View, the very cool immersive feature that's part of Google Maps. Typically, Street View is generated by cameras on cars that drive on public roads, but in this case the cameras were mounted onto a three-wheel pedicab that was driven through one of Oahu's most popular attractions. The 42-acre Polynesian Cultural Center has seven "villages" that showcase different cultures -- Fiji, Tahiti, etc.; families can do hands-on activities at each one and then end the day with a giant luau and a high-amp evening show.

More Fun Things To Do on Oahu
Boat excursions and snorkeling trips, Pearl Harbor, an Atlantis Adventures submarine outing, nature tours, glider rides, Waikiki Beach where even kids can learn to surf... Oahu may be just 44 miles long but it offers many different experiences for families.

All Inclusive Resort in Punta Cana
Shifting over to the Caribbean: the Punta Cana area in the Dominican Republic has long white sand beaches and is a popular area for all inclusive resorts. One such resort is the Ocean Blue and Sand, where the guestrooms are junior suites that can sleep a family of five. Also cool for families: a bowling alley, rock-climbing wall, kids club and teen club, Mini Disco with family dancing...
