Rice opens up a world of mealtime possibilities.
| | Perhaps the most beloved and widely used pantry staple in the world, a bag of rice — of any length or type — opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to mealtime. More often that not, when faced with picking a starch to serve with dinner, I reach for rice (and measure it for cooking using the age-old "finger trick!").
It's perfect for one dish recipes and comfort foods, like this Texas-style ground beef casserole, chicken and rice bake, or old-fashioned porcupine meatballs. Rice is comforting, simple to make for a crowd, and easy to pack up leftovers for a simple lunch the next day.
Recipes from around the globe rely on rice, from Caribbean rice and beans to Eastern European stuffed cabbage rolls and Indian biryani. Making rice is the basis of many of our favorite Asian dishes, from all kinds of fried rice to sushi.
And let's not forget rice pudding, whether you opt to let your slow cooker do the work for you with this creamy rice pudding, or traditional Puerto Rican arroz con dulce.
So however you choose to do it, embrace this wonderful cornerstone of so many international cuisines and keep many kinds in your larder. All you'll need to do when planning your next meal is pick a region.
